Guest Article – Freelance Writing Advice – How to Promote Your Talents

I saw this article over on ezinearticles about promoting your talents as a freelance writer.  I found it to be very informative, so I decided to post it here.

Freelance Writing Advice – How to Promote Your Talents

By Mike Randall

If you’re serious about becoming a paid writer, you need to know how to promote and market your talent. The most successful writers and content producers out there are continually writing and publishing their work, even if it’s simply posted for free. This is one of the best habits a new writer can get into. By writing articles and publishing them on your blog, online portfolio or Ezine page, you are keeping your skills sharp, while adding fresh promotional material to your online advertising venues. And make no mistake; your online presence is advertising and self-promotion.

An advantage of writing articles for fun during your down-time is that you get to write on a topic that interests you. Some of the best and most entertaining work I’ve done has been written during periods between jobs. Choose something that you love to do and spend some time with it. Ask questions like; what is it about this activity that really turns me on? Perhaps try approaching your topic from a point of view you’d never considered before. Commit to producing an article a day, until you get another paying gig.

Another activity that you should be doing to promote yourself, regardless of whether you have paying work at the time, is to visit the writer job boards. You probably have at least one profile on a job board, but try checking others. Create a profile, complete with all of your relevant contact information, on as many reputable job sites as you can. Make sure your name is out there. Put links to your work on all of your profiles and maintain them regularly.

Oh, and let’s not forget the most effective of all self-promotion tools — your web page. Any writer who wishes to be taken seriously has a dedicated web page that they can refer potential clients to. This page should be referenced and linked in all of your article posts, on all of your profiles and through all of your social networking pages. Did I forget to mention social networking? The ease of creating a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn page makes it inexcusable not to have one.

So remember, during periods of little or no work, write! Keep adding to your online portfolio and promotional venues. Write on things that you enjoy, you’ll find them fun and creative articles. Create and maintain profiles on writer job boards — as many as you can handle. And don’t forget your web presence; whether it’s your personal blog, social networking site, website or all of the above. Promoting yourself as a writer can feel like a full-time job, until the paying work starts rolling in. Then, you may find yourself in a dilemma, making so much money that you have little time for self-promotion.

Website Review-Self Starters Weekly Tips

As a freelancer, it’s tempting to try to go it alone. It’s really tempting to try to do and figure out everything yourself.  Don’t do it! Seriously, don’t try it.  There’s a lot of great resources out there to help you build a successful business.  This blog is one.  Another great resource for freelancers is the Self Starters Weekly Tips Forum owned by my good friend, Lynn Terry.  You could literally spend all day on this forum and just scratch the surface of the wealth of information on this forum.

If you really want to jumpstart your business, you should upgrade your membership to the elite membership as soon as possible.  It only costs $27 a month.  Lynn doesn’t always open the doors for membership.  I just became a member recently and I already feel like I’m getting my money’s worth.  Just check it out by clicking on the words Self Starters Weekly Tips Forum Elite Membership (aff) in this blog post.
