Don’t just network when you need something.
This should go without saying, but don’t just network with people when you need something. It’s really tacky when the only time the people in your network hear from you, you are asking them for a favor. Contact your colleagues when you don’t need anything.
Drop them a line just to say hi. Ask what they need help with. This will go a long way in building relationships with the people in your network. This way when you do need help with something, they’ll be more receptive to you because you will have done something for them first. Networking can be a very powerful strategy for building your freelance business, but it’s something that you have to be doing consistently for it to work for you.
