Today’s Featured Female Entrepreneur-Felicia Slattery
Today I have the privilege of featuring one of my good friends, Felicia Slattery. Without further ado, here’s more information about Felicia.
1. Tell me about yourself and your business.
Felicia J. Slattery lives her life with energy, passion and enthusiasm because she realizes each moment is precious. After nearly losing her life during childbirth in 2004, she began to put her communication and public speaking talents to use to create a positive impact on the world. She is a teacher, trainer, speaker, writer, consultant and coach and specializes in training busy professionals to succeed through effective communication and by delivering results-driven presentations. She holds two Master’s Degrees: one in Adult Education and Training and another in Communication. Her enthusiastic passion for communication is contagious because she knows that one important message delivered with power can transform a life. Learn more about Felicia at www.CommunicationTransformation.com.
2. What made you decide to start this business?
I started my business in 2006 after recovering from a traumatic birth and near-death experience. I wanted to be home with my daughters, while also doing work in my field of expertise, contributing to my family’s bottom line and also helping as many other people as I could with the message that effective communication can change your life!
3. What advice would you give to someone who was starting a brand new business?
My advice: keep moving forward. When you get an idea, see it through until you get ‘er done! Don’t try to do it alone – invest in the best coach you can afford to help you each step of the way. Even if you can only do 1 month or 1 session at a time… find someone who is where you want to be and get their help. Don’t give up. Finally don’t mistake being busy for being productive. Set some goals and reach them.
4. What do you like the most about working for yourself?
I’m a lifestyle person—so I love being able to run my business and work on my terms. I can be there for my kids and be the room Mom and volunteer at school. And I have time for things I enjoy like cooking and gardening while being able to coach people and create information that truly helps people reach their dreams for their businesses and lives. It’s so cool!
5. What do you like the least about working for yourself?
I miss the regular social interaction of an office, but I really make up for that thru social media sites such as Twitter and at live events where I am a speaker or am getting some advanced training. So really—it’s all pretty good!
6. What challenges have you faced because you are a female entrepreneur?
For me the biggest struggle has come as a result of being a Mom. There are many speaking events nationally and internationally I have had to turn down because I only travel once per month at the most so I can be home for my girls.

Today’s marketing tip–why are you hiding your prices?
Now I know there are different schools of thought on this, but I’m going here anyway. Service professionals, why are you hiding your prices? If I’m looking for someone to help me with a project, odds are pretty good that I need that work done right away.
(I’m thinking like a client here for a minute). If I have to hunt around for prices or even worse, make an appointment to talk to you about prices, this is not a good thing. I’m ready to make a decision now, and you’re making me wait to find out how much it’s gonna cost? Bad business. List your prices on your website! It lets the potential client know if they can afford you or not. Most people have a set budget in their head when they go looking for someone to outsource work to. Keep in mind that they don’t have a lot of time or they wouldn’t be looking for someone to outsource extra work to.
You can always change your prices later. All you have to do is edit your website to reflect the changes. Okay rant over. Back to my regularly scheduled positive posts!

This week’s featured entrepreneur-Angie Nelson
My name is Angie Nelson. I’m a Virtual Assistant and owner of ASN Virtual Services. A few years back, I decided I’d had enough of the cubicle farm and I was going to find a way to escape. The day-to-day drama was bringing me down mentally, physically and spiritually. I wasn’t using the skills I loved most and wasn’t being challenged in the ways I desired so much. I read and researched and read some more and finally decided starting my own online business was the way to go.
I dug my way out of my cubicle and found my freedom in working from home. The freedom to live my dreams. The freedom to no longer live paycheck-to-paycheck. The freedom to get up every day being proud of what I do and the successful business owner I have become. I have gone through many trials and errors, steps forward and steps back.
In the beginning, I was going it alone. I didn’t know where to get information. I didn’t know who to talk to. I didn’t know where to find clients. My best advice is to find a mentor in a fellow “work at homer” in your industry. Don’t see everyone as your competition and start making friends. Having someone to talk with and share is what took my business to the next level.
The most challenging thing for me is staying on top of it all. The internet changes every day and you need to find the time to keep your ear to the ground.
My favorite things are the freedoms I listed above and knowing that my future is in my hands. I decide if I succeed or fail, no one else.
I wouldn’t say I have a “least favorite,” but it can be exhausting at times keeping your name out there constantly. Every day you need to be marketing your brand in some way. The day you stop working on your business is the day your business stops working for you.
